Registering a US LLC from Pakistan: what the process actually involves
I did this for my own agency in July. Here is the real sequence, the part everyone gets wrong about the address, and the wait nobody warns you about.
I registered ScaleWiseVA LLC in Wyoming in July 2026, from Islamabad. Almost everything written about doing this is either an advert for a formation service or a listicle by somebody who has never filed anything. So here is the actual sequence, including the parts that annoyed me.
One caveat up front, and I mean it. I am not a lawyer or an accountant, and none of this is legal or tax advice. It is what I did.
First: do you need one?
Probably less often than the people selling them suggest.
You do not need a US LLC to sell on Amazon or Etsy from Pakistan. That runs on Payoneer and works fine as an individual. If someone is telling you that you cannot start without a company, check what they are selling.
Where it genuinely helps is when a US client or supplier will not contract with an individual, when you need a payment processor that will not onboard you otherwise, or when you want the business to be a thing that exists separately from you. For my agency, the third reason was the real one.
Why Wyoming
Wyoming is popular for non-residents for ordinary reasons: no state income tax, low annual fees, and it does not put member names in the public record the way some states do. Delaware has the reputation, but that reputation is built on serving companies that raise venture capital, and its franchise tax is a cost you pay for a benefit most small businesses never use.
None of that makes Wyoming special. It makes it cheap and quiet, which for an operating business run by two people is what you want.
The sequence
It goes in this order, and each step waits on the one before.
- Formation. Articles of Organization filed with the state, through a registered agent. You need a registered agent with a physical Wyoming address; a non-resident cannot be their own.
- The EIN. Form SS-4 to the IRS. This is the part that takes time for foreign applicants, because without a US Social Security Number you cannot use the instant online route. You file by fax or mail and then you wait.
- Banking and payments. Everything downstream needs the EIN, so nothing here can start until step two is finished.
The address thing everyone gets wrong
Your registered agent gives you a Wyoming address. It is a mail-forwarding address, and it is shared with a very large number of other companies. Mine is on a street where thousands of LLCs are registered.
That is completely normal and it is not a problem, right up until you put it on your website as your office. Anyone who searches that address finds a mailbox service, and a company claiming an office at a mail drop looks worse than a company that simply says where it actually works. We list Wyoming as where the company is registered, and Islamabad as where the team sits, because both are true.
The wait nobody mentions
The EIN is the bottleneck. If you are a US person with an SSN you get one in minutes online. If you are not, you are on the fax or mail route, and the timeline is measured in weeks rather than days.
What makes it worse is that it is invisible. There is no status page and no ticket number. You file, and then you wait without any signal that anything is happening. Plan the things that depend on it around that, rather than assuming you will be operating next week.
What I would tell someone starting now
Get the name decided before you file, because changing it afterwards means an amendment. Use one exact legal name spelling everywhere, on the filing, the EIN application and every account after, because mismatches cause failures that nobody explains to you. And do not pay for a package of extras before you know which of them you actually need.
